How I Got Here

A lot of people have asked me where I got the idea for this web site. It’s simple really, when I needed it, it wasn’t there.

I had sold my house in the bay area about five years ago with the intention of moving to Mexico. Life intervened and instead I found myself in Arizona for a few years, and then in Boston for a few more. Then I realized how much I missed the bay area and decided to move back. Unfortunately, by the time I was back I had been priced out of the housing market. In fact I was almost priced out of the rental market. The competition for places was fierce and the fact that I had a dog didn’t help- even if he does only weigh 12 pounds!

Then my stubborn streak kicked in. I felt sure that there had to be a way for someone to find a decent place to live within a normal budget. My past experience as a student in San Francisco had been to find a roommate so I thought, why not do it now? So I started looking at Craigslist every day, multiple times a day, trying to find a suitable share. The problem seemed to be that I’m a lot older now and almost all the shares I found were with much younger people, while I preferred someone closer to my own age. I also felt more comfortable sharing with another woman. I checked out numerous sites but couldn’t find one that I felt at ease using nor one that had women of all ages looking for shares.

I did some research and found that more and more women had similar goals. Wanting to save money and share the company of others is becoming very attractive as prices rise and our world becomes more and more unpredictable.

And so I decided to launch Women’s Home Networking to help people who were looking for the same thing I was - an affordable and comfortable home to share with someone compatible. I would like this site to be an informative and fun place to come to, not only to find housemates, but also for information on how to make your home more attractive, safer and, greener. Because ultimately we all share- we share our air, our water and our planet.

well, i heard about this from Kathy R tonight and i am just feeling like we have been 2 ships passing in the pitch black night. I have been dreaming about something like this for a long time. I hae wanted to start a boarding house; researching intentional communities and feeling trapped right now because I am a 58 year old woman whose daughter has moved on and now have a 2 bedroom in duplex ... do I rent out a room or do I move on? If so, where. This is a great time for this site.
